“Surfacing†is a long and gentle rumination about what a surface is using my paints and brushes to create that musing on an interestingly proportioned canvas. I really wanted to make something that used the entire surface as a flowing whole. I wondered about scales, and at what scale does a surface become contained. Teasing out cycles, I will generally take a lot of time in a re-iterative exploration of form, depth & nuance in my painting and drawing. The art gradually reveals to me its own relationships and inner structure. My unique eyes allows me to enjoy a unique vision. The whale was a whimsical spirit I placed to act as a symbol of Gaia’s powerful, ancient agents, her spirit moving within the universe. I played with the sense of scale a viewer might have to reconsider when looking at the work. The flow within the canvas, the depths within depths, the dance of colour – these are where I find the stories gather. Stories are what connect people, forming the sinews and bones of culture. Art is a place where unspoken stories may find their voices.
